What is a CMS?

A Content Management System (CMS) is a piece of software that runs on a server. Typically a database application, a CMS makes it easy to publish and administrate content.

Some basic features that are common to all CMSes:

Separation of content, structure and design

A CMS improves the lifecycle of your website for years to come. The “look and feel” of your site can be changed or relaunched, leaving existing content and page architecture untouched. No need to worry about copying and pasting content into another site, simply publish your new design and the CMS will pull the content into the new look.

Easy content production, no programming skills required

If you can use a computer, you can manage the content for your website. Using a graphical user interface, authors can simply create text, insert images an multimedia files, schedule content (and much more) to build and maintain a dynamic website.

This is especially true if you take advantage of TYPO3′s server-side graphics generation for making image menus, graphical headlines, etc.

Just imagine: You will never need to make another menu button again, or pay a web designer to do it for you. Each time you add or change a page, the menu will automatically update to reflect the change. Having to learn or purchasing photo editing software will not be necessary. You can upload images straight to the web from your digital camera / DV camera or a scanner.

Twitter attacked by Hackers, Facebook also slows down.

Hackers attack Twitter, Facebook also slows down

Hackers on Thursday shut down the fast-growing messaging service Twitter for hours, while Facebook experienced intermittent access problems.

Twitter said it suffered a denial-of-service attack, in which hackers command scores of computers toward a single site at the same time, preventing legitimate traffic from getting through.

The attacks may have been related to the ongoing political conflict between Russia and Georgia. They started with hackers using a botnet to send a flurry of spam e-mail messages that contained links to pages on Twitter, Facebook and other sites written by a single pro-Abkhazia activist, according to Bill Woodcock, research director of the San Francisco-based Packet Clearing House, a nonprofit that tracks Internet traffic.

Russia recognized as independent the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia after a brief war with Georgia a year ago.

When people clicked on the links, they were taken to the activist’s legitimate Web pages, but the process of loading the pages at such volumes overwhelmed some servers and disrupted service, Woodcock said. He said it’s hard to immediately tell whether it was a case of hackers trying to punish the sites for publishing views they disagree with, or if they were directing traffic to the sites out of sympathy for the activist’s message.

“There’s very little way of distinguishing which side was taking this action, because either side could hypothetically benefit from it,” Woodcock said.

The fact that a relatively common attack could disable such a well-known Web site shows just how young and vulnerable Twitter still is, even as it quickly becomes a household name used by celebrities, large corporations, small businesses and even protesters in Iran.

Iphone apps to know your neighborhood

iPhone application locates sex offenders in your neighborhood

Iphone 3Gs

Iphone 3Gs

This is an application to look into if you’re moving somewhere and you don’t know the area or if you are just concerned about the neighborhood you live in right now.

To be more specific, the Offender Locator application is a useful tool for prospective house buyers, renters, parents, people suffering from extreme paranoia, noisy people and well, just about everyone.

Why?

Well, it tracks sex offenders of course and you might be surprised who your neighbors are.

Anyways, the application has been out for more than a month and only costs a dollar. This kind of information is generally available online but with this application you can use the GPS to find Registered Offenders in your area, use your contact list to find them living near friends or family.

So if you’re curious, you can download the application here. And if your house shows up amongst a bunch of red balloons on the map, it might be time to think about moving out.

Cute jokes in bad taste.

Hope everyone looking for the best tool to generate site maps. This is the best tool I found and its totally free. Tool is really simple to use and works even for massive sites.

I’ve tried lots of online, and downloaded, generators for google sitemap files and hadn’t found anything very good until ……. I found GSiteCrawler! GSiteCrawler beats all other generators, hands down! There isn’t a paid for generator anything like as good as GSiteCrawler. It’s the best! I’m so pleased with it after 2 days that I’ve made my donation. Thank you for a superb program.

File sharing, Free Software, Downloads, P2P file sharing, bittorrent.

If you use torrents frequently, then you’ll remember December 7, 2006, as a day that will live on in infamy, a day that teh Interwebs broke in half–just a little. That was the day that BitTorrent, Bram Cohen’s torrent progenitor, announced it had bought µTorrent, the free-but-closed-source torrent client that showcased innovative features in a surprisingly lightweight app.

Now, two years since their last upgrade, BitTorrent has released its first version that combines µTorrent code with its own open-source base, and µTorrent has also come out with a minor-point upgrade. Confused? Read on.

BitTorrent 6 is a complete overhaul from its previous incarnation. The interface is the same as µTorrent’s, except for three toolbar icon changes that look more like variations than outright differences. The contents of the menus in the menubar are now identical to µTorrent as well, which means that advanced functionality like tweaking your Web UI has finally come to the BitTorrent client.

µTorrent has maintained its small footprint on system resources. BT has shrunk, correspondingly, and that’s a good thing: there’s nothing like bloatware to drive users away.

Both feature an RSS tracker and search bar, but it’s the search results where µTorrent and BitTorrent diverge. Where µTorrent’s search takes you to the MiniNova torrent site, BitTorrent’s goes to BitTorrent.com, a pay-for-most-content site. There’s also a menubar item in the BitTorrent client called Get Stuff, with links to Movies, TV, Music and Games? all at the BitTorrent content site

However, there’s been no indication that BitTorrent is going to abandon one client or the other, which is why they’re keeping the eponymous client open source and µTorrent locked down in closed source. Since they’re keeping both around, there’s been some message board chatter about positioning the smaller µTorrent as the portable program and the full BitTorrent as the one for desktop use, but it’s hard to say at this point.

For now, I’m going to keep using µTorrent as my go-to client.

Yahoo and Microsoft Search partnership

Yahoo's chief executive Carol Bartz, left, signs a global search agreement with Microsoft's chief executive Steve Ballmer at Yahoo's headquarters Wednesday.

One of the world’s largest search engines has agreed on a deal to have search partnership. In a bid to tackle the giant search engine Google, Microsoft has started aquiring yahoo for aboout 50 billion last year and failed/ Now they merge together to do the job. Let’s see if they can win the battle.

Microsoft and Yahoo announced a partnership in Internet search and advertising on Wednesday that is intended to create a stronger rival to the industry powerhouse Google.

The Microsoft-Yahoo pact is a measured step that represents a pragmatic division of duties between the two companies, instead of the blockbuster deal Microsoft initiated last year, when it bid $47.5 billion to buy Yahoo. That hostile offer was ultimately withdrawn by Microsoft, and its collapse led to a management change at Yahoo and the replacement of its co-founder Jerry Yang with an outsider, Carol Bartz, in the chief executive role.

Under the pact, Microsoft will provide the underlying search technology on Yahoo’s popular Web sites. The deal will give a lift to Microsoft’s search engine, which it recently overhauled and renamed Bing.

What is Wireless Internet Access? or Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi Zone Are Available in many different places depends on your location.

Wi-Fi Zone Are Available in many different places depends on your location.

Wireless Internet access, sometimes referred to as a “hot spot,” is a local area network (LAN) run by radio waves rather than wires. Wireless Internet access is broadcast from the central hub which is a hard-wired device that actually brings in the Internet connection. The hub, located at the main computer system or server, broadcasts Internet connectivity to clients, which is basically anyone within “hearing” range who is equipped with a wireless LAN card.

In the home, a desktop system setup for wireless Internet access will broadcast connectivity throughout the immediate area. Any family member with a laptop or desktop in another room can connect wirelessly to the Internet to share the main connection. Neighbors may also be able to access your wireless connection, which is why most wireless LANs are configured with password security. In this case, any machine that wishes to get wireless Internet access must first complete a “handshake” with the LAN, in which the password is requested. If the proper password is not supplied, access is denied. While initial security technologies were weak, security protocols for wireless Internet access have vastly improved with Wi Fi Protected Access (WPA) and Wi Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) options.

From AVG Technologies

Reviews from CNET:

This antivirus program offers rock-solid protection. AVG Free provides the bare necessities, including a real-time shield to prevent infections, anti-virus and anti-malware wrapped up in one engine, and a link scanner for Web surfing with care.

By default, the application is set to search for new virus definitions daily, but you always can use the scheduling tool to change this. Should a virus create serious system problems, AVG creates a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode. The program doesn’t tax your system when scanning or when running in the background and always proved effective in our tests. The new interface is much easier to navigate than in previous version, with tabbed navigation on the left assisting users in drilling down to the tools they need.

Though the free version of this program will suffice for average folks, those who demand more control should certainly consider AVG Anti-Virus Professional.
